Description
Overview of the medicine
Euro Oral Saline is an oral rehydration salt used to replenish fluids and electrolytes lost due to dehydration, primarily caused by diarrhea, vomiting, or excessive sweating. It helps to restore the body's fluid balance.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Dissolve 1 sachet in 200 ml of potable water. Drink as much as desired, usually 2-3 liters over 24 hours, or until dehydration subsides.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage. Monitor for signs of overhydration or electrolyte imbalance, especially in those with pre-existing cardiac or renal conditions.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment due to the risk of electrolyte imbalance. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Dissolve the contents of one sachet in 200 ml (one glass) of clean, boiled and cooled water. Stir well and drink slowly. Do not add sugar or other substances.
Mechanism of Action
Oral Rehydration Salt works by utilizing the glucose-sodium co-transport system in the small intestine. Glucose helps in the absorption of sodium and water, thus restoring fluid and electrolyte balance in the body during dehydration.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rehydration effects typically begin within minutes to an hour after administration.
Excretion
Excess electrolytes are primarily excreted via the kidneys in urine, and some through feces and sweat.
Half life
Not applicable for a mixture of electrolytes and glucose; components are utilized or excreted.
Absorption
Electrolytes and glucose are rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Glucose is metabolized for energy; electrolytes are balanced by homeostatic mechanisms.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Severe dehydration requiring intravenous fluid therapy
- Unconsciousness or inability to drink
- Severe persistent vomiting where oral intake is impossible
- Intestinal obstruction or paralytic ileus
Drug Interactions
0
No significant drug interactions are generally reported with standard oral rehydration salts.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Once dissolved, consume within 12 hours if kept at room temperature, or 24 hours if refrigerated.
Overdose
Excessive intake, particularly in individuals with impaired renal function, may lead to hypernatremia, hyperkalemia, or fluid overload. Management involves discontinuing ORS and correcting electrolyte imbalances as per medical advice.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation, as it replaces essential fluids and electrolytes.
