Overview of the medicine
Eusef-DS contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days, depending on the infection.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required unless severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Creatinine clearance 21-60 mL/min: 300 mg daily. Creatinine clearance < 20 mL/min: 200 mg daily.
How to Take
Administer orally with or without food. For better absorption and reduced GI upset, it can be taken with food.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via kidneys (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion) and some biliary excretion.
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food can delay absorption but not significantly alter total amount.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to Cefixime or other cephalosporins
- •History of serious hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase prothrombin time (INR) with concurrent use. Monitor coagulation parameters.
Probenecid
Increases plasma concentrations and prolongs half-life of Cefixime by inhibiting renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
May increase carbamazepine levels. Monitor for signs of toxicity.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Gastric lavage may be indicated. No specific antidote; treatment is largely supportive. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis does not remove Cefixime effectively.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in low concentrations in breast milk; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.
