Lab Monitoring

• Monitor magnesium levels periodically, especially during prolonged treatment (longer than 3 months) or if taken with other drugs that can cause hypomagnesemia (e.g., diuretics).
• Liver function tests may be considered in patients with severe hepatic impairment.

Doctor Notes

• Prescribe the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration consistent with the treatment goals.
• Consider magnesium supplementation and monitoring for patients on prolonged PPI therapy, especially with concomitant diuretics.
• Evaluate for C. difficile-associated diarrhea if patients develop persistent diarrhea that does not improve.

Patient Guidelines

• Take the capsule whole with water, do not chew or crush it.
• Take at least one hour before a meal.
• Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor, even if you feel better.
• Inform your doctor about all other medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.

Missed Dose Advice

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double dose.

Driving Precautions

Esomeprazole generally has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines. However, some side effects like dizziness or visual disturbances may occur rarely. If affected, avoid driving or operating machinery.

Lifestyle Advice

• Avoid foods and drinks that trigger acid reflux, such as spicy foods, fatty foods, caffeine, and alcohol.
• Eat smaller, more frequent meals.
• Do not lie down immediately after eating; wait at least 2-3 hours.
• Elevate the head of your bed to help with nighttime reflux symptoms.
