Description
Overview of the medicine
Ezygo 5 mg Oral Solution contains Bisacodyl, a stimulant laxative used for the short-term relief of occasional constipation and bowel preparation before medical procedures.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 10 years: 5-10 mg orally once daily, usually at night.
Elderly
Same as adult dose; caution advised if dehydration is a concern.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required, but caution is advised in patients with severe renal impairment due to potential electrolyte disturbances.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably at bedtime, to produce a bowel movement the following morning. Do not take within one hour of milk products or antacids.
Mechanism of Action
Bisacodyl is a stimulant laxative that acts directly on the colonic mucosa to increase peristalsis and promote fluid and electrolyte accumulation in the colon, thereby softening stool and facilitating defecation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Oral: 6-12 hours.
Excretion
Mainly via feces; a small amount of the active metabolite is excreted renally.
Half life
Not well established for desacetylbisacodyl; generally short.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; undergoes hydrolysis to the active metabolite, desacetylbisacodyl, in the gut.
Metabolism
Hydrolyzed by esterase enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract and liver to its active metabolite, desacetylbisacodyl, which then undergoes glucuronidation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Bisacodyl or any component.
- •Acute abdominal conditions (e.g., appendicitis, acute inflammatory bowel diseases).
- •Severe dehydration.
- •Intestinal obstruction.
