Description
Overview of the medicine
Farobest 150 mg Tablet contains Faropenem Sodium, which is an oral carbapenem antibiotic. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual adult dose is 150 mg three times daily. The dosage and duration of treatment should be determined by the physician based on the type and severity of infection.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required for elderly patients unless there is severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
For patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min), the dose should be reduced as advised by a physician.
How to Take
Farobest 150 mg Tablet should be taken orally. It can be taken with or without food. It is recommended to take it at regular intervals to maintain a consistent level of the medicine in your body.
Mechanism of Action
Faropenem acts by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to the disruption of bacterial cell wall formation and subsequent cell lysis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action, typically within 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Plasma half-life is approximately 1 hour.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration; bioavailability is approximately 70%. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-1.5 hours.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the kidneys to an inactive metabolite.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Faropenem or any other carbapenem antibiotics.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reactions to any other beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g., penicillins, cephalosporins).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Concomitant use with Probenecid can increase Faropenem plasma concentrations and prolong its half-life, potentially increasing the risk of adverse effects.
Valproic Acid
Carbapenems, including Faropenem, may reduce serum concentrations of valproic acid, leading to a loss of seizure control. Co-administration should be avoided or closely monitored.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. Faropenem is dialyzable, so hemodialysis may be considered in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Faropenem should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult your doctor.
