Description
Overview of the medicine
Fastdol is a brand of Paracetamol, a widely used analgesic and antipyretic medicine. It is primarily used to relieve mild to moderate pain and reduce fever. It works by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg to 1000 mg every 4-6 hours as needed. Maximum 4000 mg in 24 hours.
Elderly
Same as adults, but caution with hepatic or renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction or extended dosing interval may be necessary. Consult a doctor.
How to Take
Oral administration with or without food. Suppositories are for rectal use. IV infusion is for hospital use.
Mechanism of Action
Paracetamol is thought to work primarily by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, particularly COX-2, in the central nervous system, thereby reducing the production of prostaglandins. This leads to its analgesic and antipyretic effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes for analgesic effect, 30 minutes for antipyretic effect.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine as glucuronide and sulfate conjugates. Less than 5% is excreted unchanged.
Half life
1 to 3 hours in adults; slightly longer in neonates, the elderly, and in hepatic disease.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Mainly metabolized in the liver via conjugation (glucuronidation and sulfation). A small amount is metabolized by cytochrome P450 into a toxic intermediate (NAPQI), which is normally detoxified by glutathione.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to paracetamol or any component of the formulation
