Description
Overview of the medicine
Favozyth 200 mg suspension is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For most infections: 500 mg once daily for 3 days or 500 mg on day 1, then 250 mg once daily for 4 days. For STDs: 1 gm single dose.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required in elderly patients, unless they have severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
Mild to moderate renal impairment (creatinine clearance >10-80 mL/min): No dosage adjustment needed. Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <10 mL/min): Use with caution, dosage adjustment may be necessary.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before each use. Take the medicine orally, with or without food, as directed by your doctor. Use the provided measuring device to ensure accurate dosage. Complete the full course of treatment.
Mechanism of Action
Azithromycin, the active ingredient in Favozyth, works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, thereby preventing translocation of peptide chains and inhibiting RNA-dependent protein synthesis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects usually within 2-3 days of initiation.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in the bile (approximately 50% of an oral dose). A small portion is excreted in the urine.
Half life
Terminal elimination half-life is 2-4 days.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; however, bioavailability is approximately 37% due to significant first-pass metabolism. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver, largely to inactive metabolites, via N-demethylation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic, or any component of the formulation.
- History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase the anticoagulant effect. Monitor INR closely.
Nelfinavir
May increase azithromycin serum concentrations. Monitor for increased side effects.
Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium
May decrease peak serum levels of azithromycin. Take azithromycin at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after antacids.
QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., Amiodarone, Sotalol)
Increased risk of QT prolongation and Torsades de Pointes. Avoid co-administration if possible.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Do not freeze reconstituted suspension.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and reversible hearing loss. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic; gastric lavage and general supportive measures may be indicated.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Azithromycin is excreted in breast milk; consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
