Description
Overview of the medicine
Febuxostat 40 mg tablet is a medicine used to lower high uric acid levels (hyperuricemia) in patients with chronic gout. It helps to prevent gout attacks.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose is 40 mg once daily. If serum uric acid is > 6 mg/dL after 2 weeks, the dose may be increased to 80 mg once daily. Prophylaxis for gout flares should be considered upon initiation of therapy.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min).
How to Take
Take orally once daily, with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. It works by blocking the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which is responsible for the production of uric acid in the body. By inhibiting this enzyme, febuxostat effectively lowers serum uric acid levels.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Uric acid lowering effect begins within 1 hour.
Excretion
Excreted via both renal and hepatic routes.
Half life
Mean plasma elimination half-life is approximately 5-8 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed orally. Peak plasma concentration (Cmax) achieved in approximately 1 hour. Food does not significantly affect the extent of absorption.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver via oxidation and glucuronidation pathways.
