Description
Overview of the medicine
Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor used to treat chronic hyperuricemia in patients with gout.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial 40 mg once daily; if serum uric acid is >6 mg/dL after 2 weeks, increase to 80 mg once daily.
Elderly
No dose adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
Mild to moderate: No dose adjustment. Severe: Use with caution, consider 40 mg initially.
How to Take
Oral, once daily, with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
It works by inhibiting xanthine oxidase, an enzyme involved in uric acid synthesis, thereby lowering serum uric acid levels.

Onset
Uric acid lowering effect seen within 2 weeks.
Excretion
Both renal (approximately 49%) and fecal (approximately 45%) excretion.
