Fedrin (Ephedrine) is a sympathomimetic amine primarily used as a decongestant for nasal congestion, a bronchodilator for asthma, and to treat hypotension, especially during spinal anesthesia. It acts by stimulating alpha and beta adrenergic receptors.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Oral: 25-50 mg, 3-4 times daily; Intravenous: 5-25 mg slowly, repeated as needed for hypotension
Elderly
Initiate with lower doses due to potential increased sensitivity

Mechanism of Action

Contraindications

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include restlessness, tremor, palpitations, severe hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, paranoia, hallucinations, and seizures. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, managing blood pressure and cardiac rhythm.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Excreted into breast milk, use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.
