Description
Overview of the medicine
Fexofenadine is a second-generation antihistamine used to treat seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria. It provides relief from symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy throat, watery eyes, and hives.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Seasonal allergic rhinitis: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily. Chronic idiopathic urticaria: 180 mg once daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required for elderly patients with normal renal function.
Renal_impairment
For adults with impaired renal function, the recommended starting dose is 60 mg once daily for seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria.
How to Take
Oral administration. Take with water, preferably before a meal. Do not take with fruit juice.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-blocker. It inhibits the effects of histamine by competitively blocking H1 receptors on effector cells, thereby reducing allergy symptoms without causing significant central nervous system effects.

Primarily excreted in feces (80%), with a small amount in urine (11%) as unchanged drug.

Approximately 11-15 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; about 5% of the dose is metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin, Ketoconazole
Can increase plasma levels of fexofenadine, though clinical significance is usually minimal.
Antacids containing aluminum and magnesium
Can decrease the absorption of fexofenadine. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture.
Overdose
Symptoms may include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. Management is symptomatic and supportive; no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk, caution advised.
