Description
Overview of the medicine
Fexen 120 mg Tablet contains Fexofenadine Hydrochloride, a non-drowsy antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For seasonal allergic rhinitis: 120 mg once daily or 60 mg twice daily. For chronic idiopathic urticaria: 180 mg once daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in patients with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
For seasonal allergic rhinitis: 60 mg once daily. For chronic idiopathic urticaria: 60 mg once daily. Use with caution.
How to Take
Take orally with water, preferably before a meal. Do not take with fruit juices (grapefruit, orange, apple) as they may reduce absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a natural substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. It does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier, resulting in minimal sedative effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptom relief usually begins within 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in feces (approximately 80%), and a small amount in urine (approximately 11%).
Half life
Elimination half-life ranges from 11 to 15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentration (Tmax) is reached in about 1-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; approximately 5% of the total dose undergoes hepatic metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any components of the tablet.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin and Ketoconazole
May increase plasma levels of fexofenadine. Clinical significance is generally minimal.
Antacids (aluminum and magnesium containing)
May decrease fexofenadine absorption. Separate administration by 2 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, dizziness, and dry mouth. Management involves symptomatic and supportive treatment. Hemodialysis does not effectively remove fexofenadine from blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Fexofenadine is excreted into breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
