Description
Overview of the medicine
Fix-A 100 mg Suspension is an oral antibiotic belonging to the cephalosporin group, used to treat various bacterial infections in children, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and otitis media.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Children
Children 6 months to 12 years: 8 mg/kg/day, given as a single daily dose or in two divided doses (4 mg/kg every 12 hours). Max 400 mg/day.
Renal_impairment
Creatinine clearance 21-60 ml/min: 75% of standard daily dose. Creatinine clearance <20 ml/min: 50% of standard daily dose.
How to Take
Administer orally with or without food. Shake the suspension well before each use. Use an accurate measuring device (e.g., oral syringe) for precise dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death. It is bactericidal.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-6 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in urine via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion, and also some via bile.
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food slightly delays absorption but does not significantly affect the extent.
Metabolism
Minimal metabolism; primarily excreted as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics
- History of serious hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin (due to potential cross-reactivity)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance anticoagulant effect, increasing risk of bleeding. Monitor INR closely.
Probenecid
May increase cefixime plasma levels and prolong its duration of action.
Carbamazepine
Concomitant use may increase carbamazepine levels.
Storage
Store dry powder at controlled room temperature (20-25°C). After reconstitution, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard unused portion after 14 days (or as per label instructions).
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Management is supportive and symptomatic. Gastric lavage may be considered. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis do not remove significant amounts of cefixime.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; caution is advised when administered to a nursing mother.
