Description
Overview of the medicine
Flatameal DS is a combination medicine used for the symptomatic relief of flatulence, bloating, and indigestion caused by excessive gas in the digestive tract.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 tablets 3-4 times daily, preferably after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage. No specific dosage adjustment is usually required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for patients with renal impairment, as the active ingredients are not renally excreted.
How to Take
The tablets can be chewed or swallowed whole with water. It is best taken after meals and at bedtime for optimal relief.
Mechanism of Action
Simethicone acts as an antifoaming agent, reducing the surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract, allowing them to coalesce and be easily passed. Activated charcoal adsorbs gases and toxins, preventing their absorption and aiding in their elimination.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically occurs within 30 minutes.
Excretion
Both simethicone and activated charcoal are excreted unchanged in the feces.
Half life
Not applicable, as neither simethicone nor activated charcoal are absorbed systemically.
Absorption
Simethicone is physiologically inert and is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Activated charcoal is also not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Neither simethicone nor activated charcoal undergo metabolic changes in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to simethicone, activated charcoal, or any other component of the formulation.
- Known or suspected intestinal obstruction.
Drug Interactions
Antacids
While often taken together, excessively high doses of antacids might theoretically interfere with activated charcoal’s adsorptive capacity, though usually not clinically significant.
Other oral medications
Activated charcoal can adsorb other orally administered medications, potentially reducing their absorption and efficacy. It is advisable to administer Flatameal DS at least 2 hours before or after other medications.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep in the original packaging.
Overdose
Due to the non-systemic absorption of simethicone and activated charcoal, overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity. In case of accidental overdose, symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken if necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Flatameal DS is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation as its active ingredients are not absorbed systemically. However, it is always recommended to consult a physician before using any medication during these periods.
