Overview of the medicine
Flavoxate is a urinary antispasmodic used to relieve symptoms of painful or difficult urination, urgency, frequency, and nocturia associated with conditions like cystitis, prostatitis, urethritis, and urolithiasis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
100 mg to 200 mg three or four times daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required, but use with caution due to potential anticholinergic side effects.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage reduction may be necessary in severe impairment.
How to Take
Orally, with water. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Flavoxate works by directly relaxing the smooth muscles of the urinary tract. It has anticholinergic properties that block muscarinic receptors, reducing bladder muscle spasms.

Approximately 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily via urine, mainly as metabolites.

Approximately 3.5 hours.

Drug Interactions
Anticholinergics

Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include severe anticholinergic effects (dry mouth, blurred vision, tachycardia, urinary retention, constipation). Management is supportive and symptomatic.

Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excretion into breast milk is unknown; use with caution.
