Description
Overview of the medicine
Flavoxate is an anticholinergic medication used to treat symptoms of an overactive bladder and other urinary tract disorders, such as painful urination, frequent urination, and urgency.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One 200 mg tablet three to four times a day. Dosage should be adjusted according to the patient's response.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually required, but caution is advised in elderly patients due to potential increased sensitivity to anticholinergic effects.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dose reduction may be considered in severe renal impairment, though specific guidelines are not well-established.
How to Take
Oral. Swallow the tablet whole with water. It can be taken with or after food to minimize stomach upset.
Mechanism of Action
Flavoxate acts directly on the smooth muscles of the urinary tract, exerting an antispasmodic effect. It helps relax the bladder muscles, reducing spasms and associated symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily via urine as metabolites (approximately 50-60% within 24 hours).
Half life
1-2 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Rapidly metabolized in the liver, primarily to methylflavone carboxylic acid (active metabolite).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Pyloric or duodenal obstruction
- •Obstructive intestinal lesions or ileus
- •Achalasia
- •Gastrointestinal hemorrhage
- •Obstructive uropathies (e.g., prostatic hypertrophy with urinary retention)
- •Hypersensitivity to flavoxate or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
May increase digoxin levels due to decreased gastrointestinal motility, requiring careful monitoring.
Anticholinergic agents
May enhance anticholinergic effects (e.g., dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe anticholinergic effects such as blurred vision, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, flushing, nausea, vomiting, and tachycardia. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage or emetics if ingestion is recent.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Flavoxate should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excretion into breast milk is unknown; use with caution in nursing mothers and only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the infant.
