Description
Overview of the medicine
Florium 10 mg Tablet contains Flurazepam Hydrochloride, a benzodiazepine derivative. It is primarily used for the short-term treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulty falling asleep, frequent nocturnal awakenings, and/or early morning awakenings. It has hypnotic, sedative, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
15 mg to 30 mg orally at bedtime, as prescribed by a physician. In some cases, 10 mg may be sufficient.
Elderly
Initially, 15 mg orally at bedtime. Dosage should be carefully adjusted due to increased sensitivity and slower metabolism.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; lower doses may be required due to potential accumulation of metabolites.
How to Take
Take Florium 10 mg Tablet orally just before bedtime. It should be swallowed whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Flurazepam enhances the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptor, a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. This action results in generalized central nervous system depression, leading to its sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic, and muscle relaxant effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action within 15-45 minutes.
Excretion
Excreted primarily in the urine as metabolites, with less than 1% as unchanged drug.
Half life
Parent drug: 2-3 hours; Active metabolites: 47-100 hours (due to desalkylflurazepam).
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by oxidative pathways, primarily to N1-hydroxyethylflurazepam and N1-desalkylflurazepam, which are active.
