Description
Overview of the medicine
Flu-K 125 mg Suspension contains Flucloxacillin, a penicillinase-resistant penicillin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, especially those caused by staphylococci and streptococci. It is particularly suitable for children due to its suspension form.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults in this low-strength suspension form; adult dosage for flucloxacillin is usually 250-500 mg every 6 hours.
Children
25-50 mg/kg/day in divided doses, usually every 6 hours. For children 2-10 years: 125-250 mg every 6 hours. For children under 2 years: 62.5-125 mg every 6 hours.
Renal_impairment
Reduced dosage necessary in severe renal impairment (e.g., 250 mg every 8-12 hours if GFR < 10 mL/min for adults; adjust proportionally for children).
How to Take
Oral. Best taken on an empty stomach (at least 30-60 minutes before food or 2 hours after food) to maximize absorption. Shake the suspension well before each use. Use the provided measuring spoon or cup.
Mechanism of Action
Flucloxacillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial lysis and death. It is effective against penicillinase-producing bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine, with some biliary excretion.
Half life
Approximately 0.5-1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, though food can reduce absorption. Peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to penicillin antibiotics or any component of the formulation
- History of flucloxacillin-associated jaundice or hepatic dysfunction
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May alter INR values, requiring close monitoring and dose adjustment of warfarin.
Probenecid
Increases and prolongs plasma levels of flucloxacillin by decreasing renal tubular secretion.
Methotrexate
May increase methotrexate toxicity due to reduced renal clearance.
Oral Contraceptives
Potential for reduced efficacy of oral contraceptives (advise additional contraception).
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Store reconstituted suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C). Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and electrolyte imbalance. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage and hemodialysis are generally not effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Category B. Use with caution, only if clearly needed. Lactation: Excreted in breast milk in small amounts. Generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but monitor infant for potential adverse effects (e.g., diarrhea, candidiasis).

Lab Monitoring
- Liver function tests (especially with prolonged use or in patients with hepatic impairment)
- Renal function tests (in patients with renal impairment)
- Complete blood count (in patients on long-term therapy)
Doctor Notes
- Advise parents on proper measurement and administration techniques.
- Emphasize completing the full course to prevent resistance.
- Monitor for signs of hypersensitivity, especially in patients with penicillin allergy history.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve.
- Do not share this medicine with others.
- Shake well before use and use a measuring device.
- Report any unusual side effects to your doctor.
Missed Dose Advice
