Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For vaginal candidiasis: 150 mg as a single oral dose. For other indications, dosage varies; consult physician.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment usually required unless renal impairment is present.

How to Take
Oral. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits fungal cytochrome P450-dependent 14α-lanosterol demethylation, essential for ergosterol synthesis.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fluconazole or other azole antifungals
- Concomitant use with terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, quinidine, or erythromycin (due to QTc prolongation risk)

Increased prothrombin time/INR.
Phenytoin
Increased phenytoin levels.
Rifampicin
Decreased fluconazole levels.
Sulfonylureas
Increased blood glucose lowering effect.

Overdose
Symptoms may include hallucinations and paranoid behavior. Gastric lavage and supportive measures, possibly hemodialysis, may be necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use in pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Not recommended during breastfeeding as it is excreted in breast milk.
