Description
Overview of the medicine
Fexofenadine is a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever), including sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose/palate/throat, and itchy watery eyes. It is also used to treat symptoms of chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives), such as itching and rash.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For seasonal allergic rhinitis: 180 mg orally once daily. For chronic idiopathic urticaria: 120 mg orally once daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally recommended for elderly patients with normal renal function.
Renal_impairment
For patients with impaired renal function (creatinine clearance < 80 mL/min), a starting dose of 60 mg once daily is recommended. For severe renal impairment or dialysis, consult a physician.
How to Take
Take orally with water, with or without food. Avoid taking with fruit juice.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It blocks the action of histamine, a natural substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. By blocking histamine, it helps to relieve symptoms like sneezing, itching, and runny nose without causing significant drowsiness.
