Description
Overview of the medicine
Fritt 500 mg Tablet is an antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including infections of the urinary tract, respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue, bones and joints, and gastrointestinal tract. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 250-750 mg twice daily, depending on the infection type and severity. For most common infections, 500 mg twice daily is recommended.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required based solely on age, but renal function should be assessed and dosage adjusted if necessary.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance <30 mL/min, the dosage should be reduced to half the standard dose or given once daily.
How to Take
Fritt 500 mg Tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not chew or crush the tablet. It should be taken at regularly spaced intervals.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to disruption of bacterial DNA and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours for antibacterial action.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys via both glomerular filtration and tubular secretion (50-70%). Non-renal clearance accounts for 30-50%.
Half life
Approximately 3-5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; absolute bioavailability is approximately 70%. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved 1-2 hours after oral administration.
Metabolism
Undergoes limited hepatic metabolism (15-30%) to four active metabolites (desethyleneciprofloxacin, sulfociprofloxacin, oxociprofloxacin, and formylciprofloxacin).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones.
- •Concomitant administration with tizanidine.
- •History of tendon disorders related to quinolone administration.
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs
May increase the risk of CNS stimulation and convulsive seizures.
Warfarin
Increased anticoagulant effect; monitor INR.
Tizanidine
Concomitant use is contraindicated due to increased tizanidine plasma concentrations and risk of adverse effects.
Theophylline
Increased plasma levels of theophylline; monitor theophylline levels.
Antacids/Sucralfate/Metal ions
Reduced absorption of ciprofloxacin; administer at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. Gastric lavage may be considered. Adequate hydration should be maintained. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis may remove a small amount of ciprofloxacin from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use in pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Ciprofloxacin is excreted into breast milk; breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.
