Description
Overview of the medicine
Fungicort cream is a combination medication containing an antifungal (Miconazole Nitrate) and a corticosteroid (Hydrocortisone). It is used to treat fungal skin infections that are associated with inflammation, redness, and itching.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area twice daily, preferably morning and evening. Gently massage until the cream disappears. Continue for 1-2 weeks after symptoms resolve, but not for more than 4 weeks without medical review.
Elderly
No special dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly before applying the cream. Wash hands before and after application. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes.
Mechanism of Action
Miconazole Nitrate works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes, leading to increased permeability and ultimately cell death. Hydrocortisone, a mild corticosteroid, reduces inflammation, itching, and redness by suppressing the immune response and vasoconstriction.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid symptomatic relief (itching, redness) due to hydrocortisone, with antifungal effects developing over several days to weeks.
Excretion
Minimally absorbed components and their metabolites are excreted primarily via urine and feces.
Half life
Not clinically significant for topical application due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption when applied topically to intact skin. Absorption may increase with broken skin, prolonged use, or occlusive dressings.
Metabolism
Minimally absorbed components are metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Miconazole, Hydrocortisone, or any excipients.
- •Viral skin infections (e.g., herpes simplex, chickenpox).
- •Tuberculosis of the skin.
- •Acne vulgaris and rosacea.
- •Perioral dermatitis.
- •Nappy rash.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Though systemic absorption is minimal, prolonged or extensive use of topical corticosteroids may theoretically increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Monitor INR if concurrent use is significant.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Systemic overdose is highly unlikely with topical administration. Excessive topical use may lead to local adverse effects such as skin atrophy, striae, or rarely, symptoms of Cushing's syndrome, especially with occlusive dressings or on large surface areas.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy or lactation should only be considered if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a doctor. Avoid prolonged use or application to large areas.
