Description
Overview of the medicine
Furotil 125 mg Tablet contains Cefuroxime Axetil, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250 mg to 500 mg twice daily depending on the infection severity and type. For Furotil 125 mg, this typically means two tablets twice daily for certain infections or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dose reduction required unless renal function is significantly impaired. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min). A reduced frequency or dose may be advised.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably with food, to enhance absorption. Do not crush or chew the tablet; swallow whole.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime Axetil exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall, which prevents the formation of cross-links between peptidoglycan chains, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached approximately 2-3 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Excreted unchanged in the urine, primarily via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1.2 to 1.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and hydrolyzed to cefuroxime. Absorption is enhanced with food.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agent (e.g., penicillins, monobactams, carbapenems).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Concomitant administration with probenecid increases the area under the serum concentration versus time curve by 50%.
Oral anticoagulants
May potentiate the anticoagulant effect. Monitor INR/PT.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives; advise additional barrier method.
Antacids/H2 blockers/PPIs
May reduce the bioavailability of cefuroxime. Administer at least 1-2 hours apart if possible.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms include cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis can effectively remove cefuroxime from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Cefuroxime has been studied in pregnant women and has not shown an increased risk of fetal abnormalities. It is excreted in human milk in small concentrations; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
