Description
Overview of the medicine
g-antacid-mh 400 mg Chewable Tablet is an antacid medication used to relieve symptoms of indigestion, heartburn, and sour stomach by neutralizing excess stomach acid.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Chew 1-2 tablets four times a day, 20 minutes to 1 hour after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician. Do not exceed 8 tablets in 24 hours.
Elderly
Same as adults, but caution is advised in elderly patients with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
Use with extreme caution and under medical supervision, as there is a risk of hypermagnesemia and aluminium accumulation. Dosage reduction may be necessary.
How to Take
Tablets should be thoroughly chewed before swallowing. Do not swallow whole. Drink a glass of water after chewing if desired.
Mechanism of Action
It works by directly neutralizing hydrochloric acid in the stomach, thereby increasing the pH of gastric contents and reducing acidity. Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide act synergistically, with Aluminium Hydroxide causing constipation and Magnesium Hydroxide having a laxative effect, balancing each other.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within 5-10 minutes.
Excretion
Unabsorbed drug is excreted via feces. Small amounts of absorbed aluminium and magnesium are excreted renally.
Half life
Not applicable for its primary antacid action. Systemically absorbed ions have a short half-life.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption of aluminium and magnesium ions. Unabsorbed portions are excreted in feces.
Metabolism
Not metabolized in the systemic circulation for its antacid effect.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Severe renal impairment
- •Hypophosphatemia (low phosphate levels)
- •Allergy or hypersensitivity to aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, or any other component of the tablet.
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
May decrease digoxin absorption. Administer digoxin several hours before or after the antacid.
Iron salts
Reduced absorption of iron supplements. Separate administration by 2-3 hours.
Tetracyclines
Antacids can chelate tetracyclines, reducing their absorption. Separate administration by 2-3 hours.
Fluoroquinolones
Absorption of fluoroquinolones (e.g., ciprofloxacin) can be significantly reduced. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Thyroid hormones
May decrease absorption of levothyroxine. Separate administration by 4 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include severe diarrhea or constipation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain. In patients with renal impairment, hypermagnesemia (muscle weakness, hypotension, respiratory depression) or aluminium toxicity (encephalopathy, bone disease) can occur. Treatment is supportive; hemodialysis may be required in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for occasional use during pregnancy and lactation, but use should be discussed with a doctor. High doses or prolonged use should be avoided.
