Description
Overview of the medicine
G-Antacid-MH 400 mg Suspension is an oral antacid formulation containing Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide. It is used for the relief of symptoms associated with indigestion, heartburn, and sour stomach by neutralizing excess stomach acid.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10-20 ml (2-4 teaspoonfuls) 3-4 times daily, between meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required, but caution in renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Accumulation of aluminum and magnesium may occur. Avoid high doses or prolonged use.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before use. Take orally, preferably between meals and at bedtime. Do not exceed recommended dosage.
Mechanism of Action
Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide react with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form water and a neutral salt, thereby increasing the gastric pH and reducing the acidity. They do not directly inhibit acid secretion but rather neutralize existing acid.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 5-15 minutes
Excretion
Mainly excreted in faeces as unabsorbed compounds. Absorbed magnesium and aluminum are excreted via urine.
Half life
Not applicable for local acting antacids, but absorbed ions are excreted renally.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption; acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract. Small amounts of aluminum and magnesium may be absorbed.
Metabolism
Not applicable for local acting antacids. Absorbed ions are primarily renally excreted.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to any component
- •Severe renal impairment
- •Hypophosphatemia (for aluminum hydroxide)
Drug Interactions
Iron supplements
Reduced absorption of iron. Separate administration times.
Phosphate binders
Aluminum hydroxide binds phosphates and can exacerbate hypophosphatemia.
Tetracyclines & Quinolones
Antacids can reduce the absorption of these antibiotics. Take antacids at least 2 hours before or after.
Cardiac glycosides (e.g., Digoxin)
Reduced absorption.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Overdose is rare due to minimal systemic absorption. Symptoms may include diarrhoea (due to magnesium) or constipation (due to aluminium), abdominal discomfort. In severe renal impairment, hypermagnesemia or aluminum toxicity may occur. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for occasional use during pregnancy and lactation, but use with caution and under medical advice, especially with prolonged or high-dose use. Aluminium may accumulate in the fetus with prolonged use. Magnesium may have a laxative effect in the mother and infant.
