Description
Overview of the medicine
Hyoscine Butylbromide is an antispasmodic agent used to relieve cramps in the gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary tract, and biliary tract. It works by relaxing smooth muscles and is typically administered by injection for rapid effect.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
20 mg intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously (IV), slowly. May be repeated after 30 minutes if needed, up to a maximum of 100 mg in 24 hours.
Elderly
Same as adults, but caution advised due to potential for increased sensitivity to anticholinergic effects.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment generally needed, but use with caution. Monitor for adverse effects.
How to Take
Administer slowly by intravenous injection (over 1 minute) or intramuscularly into a large muscle. Must be administered by a healthcare professional.
Mechanism of Action
Hyoscine Butylbromide acts by blocking the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, thereby exerting a spasmolytic effect on the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal, biliary, and genitourinary tracts. It has little to no central nervous system effects due to its quaternary ammonium structure.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes (IV), 15-30 minutes (IM).
Excretion
Mainly renal (unchanged drug and metabolites), some biliary/fecal.
Half life
Approximately 4.5-8 hours.
Absorption
Poor oral absorption, very low bioavailability. After IM/IV administration, systemic absorption is rapid and complete.
Metabolism
Primarily hydrolyzed in the liver and partially excreted unchanged.
