Description
Overview of the medicine
Gabafix 25 mg Tablet contains Gabapentin, an anticonvulsant medication used to treat certain types of neuropathic pain and as an adjunct therapy for partial seizures.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose is typically 300 mg daily, titrated up to 900-1800 mg/day in divided doses. 25 mg is a very low starting dose, often used for sensitive patients or specific conditions like restless legs syndrome, and is gradually increased. Maximum recommended daily dose is 3600 mg.
Elderly
Dosage should be adjusted based on renal function. Lower starting doses are often recommended.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary based on creatinine clearance. For severe renal impairment, the dose should be significantly reduced.
How to Take
Take Gabafix 25 mg Tablet orally with or without food, as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break it.
Mechanism of Action
Gabapentin's exact mechanism is not fully understood. It is thought to modulate the activity of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system, thereby reducing the release of excitatory neurotransmitters and decreasing neuronal excitability.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action for pain relief can be days to weeks. For seizures, it's typically within days of reaching a therapeutic dose.
Excretion
Excreted unchanged in the urine, primarily via renal excretion.
Half life
Approximately 5-7 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, though absorption is dose-dependent (saturable). Bioavailability decreases with increasing dose.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized in humans.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to gabapentin or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Antacids
May decrease the bioavailability of gabapentin. Administer gabapentin at least 2 hours after antacid administration.
Opioid Analgesics (e.g., Morphine)
May increase the concentration of gabapentin and increase the risk of central nervous system (CNS) depression and respiratory depression.
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include dizziness, double vision, slurred speech, drowsiness, lethargy, and mild diarrhea. Management involves symptomatic and supportive care. Hemodialysis can be considered for severe cases, especially in patients with renal impairment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Gabapentin should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Gabapentin is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
