Description
Overview of the medicine
Gabafix 5 mg Tablet contains Gabapentin, an anticonvulsant and neuropathic pain agent. It is primarily used to treat certain types of seizures (epilepsy) and nerve pain (neuropathic pain), such as postherpetic neuralgia. While 5 mg is an unusually low strength for Gabapentin, its action is to stabilize electrical activity in the brain and modify nerve signals.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual starting dose for Gabapentin is 300 mg daily for neuropathic pain, or 300 mg three times daily (900 mg/day) for epilepsy, titrated upwards as needed. A 5 mg tablet is a very low strength; multiple tablets would be required to reach therapeutic doses. Consult a doctor for specific dosage instructions.
Elderly
Dosage should be adjusted based on renal function and individual tolerance. Start with a lower dose.
Renal_impairment
Dosage must be reduced in patients with impaired renal function. Consult a doctor for dose adjustment based on creatinine clearance.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
The exact mechanism of action of gabapentin is not fully understood. It is structurally related to the neurotransmitter GABA but does not bind to GABA-A or GABA-B receptors. It is thought to exert its effects by binding to the α2δ (alpha-2-delta) subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system, which reduces the release of excitatory neurotransmitters.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action for pain relief can be days to weeks. For epilepsy, it depends on titration.
Excretion
Excreted unchanged by the kidneys. Renal excretion is the sole route of elimination.
Half life
Approximately 5 to 7 hours.
Absorption
Oral absorption is dose-dependent, decreasing with increasing dose. Bioavailability is approximately 60% for a 300 mg dose.
Metabolism
Gabapentin is not metabolized in humans.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Gabapentin or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Ethanol
May enhance CNS depressant effects of gabapentin.
Antacids
May reduce gabapentin bioavailability. Take gabapentin at least 2 hours after antacid administration.
Opioids (e.g., Morphine)
May increase gabapentin concentrations and increase CNS depression. Monitor for sedation and respiratory depression.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include dizziness, double vision, slurred speech, drowsiness, lethargy, and mild diarrhea. Management is primarily supportive. Hemodialysis may be beneficial in patients with severe renal impairment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Gabapentin should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman. Consult your doctor.
