Description
Overview of the medicine
Genmax-03 Eye Drop is a sterile ophthalmic solution containing Moxifloxacin, a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as bacterial conjunctivitis, caused by susceptible strains of microorganisms.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times a day for 7 days.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid to form a pouch, and drop the medication into the pouch. Close eye gently. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. If using other eye medications, wait at least 5 minutes between applications.
Mechanism of Action
Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action, with clinical improvement often observed within 2-5 days of treatment initiation.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged via the kidneys and bile in systemic circulation; however, ocular excretion pathways are localized and not well characterized systemically.
Half life
Systemic half-life is approximately 11-15 hours, but ocular tissue elimination is more localized and rapid. Due to minimal systemic absorption, plasma half-life is not directly indicative of ocular pharmacokinetics.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs after topical ocular administration. Peak plasma concentrations are typically very low and often below the quantifiable limit.
Metabolism
Moxifloxacin is minimally metabolized in the eye. Systemically, it undergoes phase II metabolism (sulfate and glucuronide conjugation).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics.
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Corticosteroids (ocular)
Concurrent use may mask signs of infection or enhance fungal/viral growth, but no direct pharmacokinetic interaction is expected.
Other ophthalmic solutions
If more than one topical ophthalmic medication is being used, they should be administered at least 5 minutes apart.
Storage
Store at controlled room temperature (20°C to 25°C). Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Due to the small capacity of the conjunctival sac and minimal systemic absorption, an acute overdose from topical ocular administration is unlikely. If accidentally ingested, symptomatic treatment may be necessary; seek medical advice if large quantities are consumed.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown whether ophthalmic moxifloxacin is excreted in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
