Description
Overview of the medicine
Genmax-03 Eye Ointment contains Gentamicin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, used to treat bacterial infections of the eye such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, and blepharitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small ribbon (approx. 1 cm) into the conjunctival sac 2-3 times daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required; use as per adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for topical ocular use due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
Wash hands before and after application. Pull down the lower eyelid to create a pocket. Apply a small amount of ointment into the pocket. Close the eye gently for 1-2 minutes. Avoid touching the tube tip to the eye or any surface.
Mechanism of Action
Gentamicin binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within hours of application.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged if absorbed systemically, though ocular absorption is minimal.
Half life
Not significant systemically; locally, sustained release from ointment.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption following ocular administration.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to gentamicin or any component of the formulation
- Viral or fungal eye infections
Drug Interactions
Systemic Drugs
No significant systemic drug interactions expected due to minimal ocular absorption. However, avoid concomitant use with other topical ophthalmic preparations unless advised by a physician, to prevent dilution or altered absorption.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Keep away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose with topical ophthalmic gentamicin is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. If accidental oral ingestion occurs, seek medical attention. Symptomatic and supportive treatment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor before use.
