Description
Overview of the medicine
Gentob-03 Eye Ointment is an antibiotic preparation used to treat various bacterial infections of the eye, such as conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and keratitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount (approximately 1/2 inch ribbon) into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) 2-3 times daily, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage. No specific dose adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
Not applicable for ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pouch, apply a thin strip of ointment, and close the eye briefly. Avoid touching the applicator tip to the eye or any surface.
Mechanism of Action
The active ingredient, likely Tobramycin, inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, leading to cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action, typically within hours of application.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys if systemically absorbed, but local effects are predominant.
Half life
Systemic half-life is not clinically relevant for ophthalmic use due to negligible systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs following ophthalmic administration, resulting in high local concentrations.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized systemically when applied topically to the eye.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tobramycin or any other component of the formulation.
- Known allergy to other aminoglycoside antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Other Ophthalmic Preparations
If using more than one ophthalmic medication, allow at least 5 minutes between applications. Ointments should be applied last.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Do not freeze. Keep away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Ophthalmic overdose is unlikely. If excessive amount is applied, rinse the eye(s) with lukewarm water. No specific antidote is available.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Minimal systemic absorption suggests low risk to fetus. For lactation, it is unknown whether topical ophthalmic tobramycin is excreted in human milk, but systemic exposure is low.
