Description
Overview of the medicine
Hairgain-5 Scalp Solution is a topical medication containing Minoxidil 5% used to stimulate hair growth and slow down hair loss in individuals with androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern baldness).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply 1 ml of the 5% solution twice daily to the scalp in the hair loss area, starting from the center of the affected area. Total daily dose should not exceed 2 ml.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is required for topical minoxidil due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply 1 ml directly to the dry scalp in the hair loss area twice daily, using the provided applicator. Spread the solution evenly with fingertips. Wash hands thoroughly immediately after application. Do not apply to other body parts.
Mechanism of Action
Minoxidil topical solution works by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles, thereby promoting hair growth and preventing further hair loss. It prolongs the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle and stimulates resting hair follicles to enter the growth phase. The exact mechanism is not fully understood but may involve opening potassium channels.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Hair growth stimulation usually becomes apparent after 2 to 4 months of consistent use. Maximum effect may take 12 months.
Excretion
Mainly excreted by the kidneys as minoxidil and its glucuronide conjugates.
Half life
The systemic half-life of absorbed minoxidil is approximately 4 hours, but the local effect on hair follicles persists longer.
Absorption
Systemic absorption of topically applied minoxidil is low, typically around 1-2% of the applied dose, which can vary with application site and skin integrity. Plasma concentrations are very low.
Metabolism
Absorbed minoxidil is primarily metabolized in the liver by glucuronidation to inactive conjugates.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to minoxidil or any component of the solution.
- •Individuals with a history of heart disease, including heart attack, stroke, or high blood pressure (consult a doctor).
- •On inflamed, irritated, infected, or painful scalp.
- •Sudden, patchy hair loss or unexplained hair loss.
Drug Interactions
Guanethidine
Although systemic absorption of topical minoxidil is minimal, there's a theoretical risk of orthostatic hypotension in patients taking peripheral vasodilators like guanethidine. Monitor blood pressure.
Corticosteroids, Retinoids, Petrolatum
May increase minoxidil absorption if applied concomitantly, potentially leading to increased systemic effects.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from direct sunlight and heat. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Accidental ingestion or excessive topical application may lead to systemic effects of minoxidil, such as hypotension, tachycardia, dizziness, headache, and fluid retention. Seek immediate medical attention.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Minoxidil topical solution is generally not recommended during pregnancy or lactation due to potential risks to the fetus/infant. Consult a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding.
