Description
Overview of the medicine
Hairgrow-5 Scalp Solution is a topical medication containing Minoxidil, used to stimulate hair growth and slow balding in adults with androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness and female pattern hair loss).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply 1 mL of solution to the affected area of the scalp twice daily, at least 12 hours apart. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 2 mL.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is recommended for elderly patients; use as for adults.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is recommended for topical application as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
Ensure the scalp and hair are completely dry before application. Apply 1 mL using the provided dropper or pump sprayer directly onto the balding area of the scalp. Gently massage it in. Wash hands thoroughly after application. Do not wash hair for at least 4 hours after application.
Mechanism of Action
Minoxidil is a peripheral vasodilator. When applied topically, its exact mechanism of action for hair growth is not fully understood, but it is believed to increase blood flow to the hair follicles, stimulate follicular enlargement, and prolong the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle. It may also open potassium channels, which contributes to its effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Hair regrowth usually begins after 2-4 months of twice-daily application. Maximum effect may take 12 months.
Excretion
The primary route of excretion of Minoxidil and its metabolites is via the kidneys. Approximately 97% of absorbed Minoxidil is eliminated within 4 days.
Half life
The systemic half-life of absorbed Minoxidil is approximately 4.2 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 1.4-1.7% of topically applied Minoxidil is absorbed systemically. Systemic absorption is increased by increasing the dose, frequency of application, or applying to a compromised scalp.
Metabolism
Systemically absorbed Minoxidil is primarily metabolized by conjugation with glucuronic acid, mainly in the liver.

Clinical Trials
Numerous clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of topical Minoxidil 5% in promoting hair growth and slowing hair loss in men and women with androgenetic alopecia, showing superior results compared to placebo and sometimes 2% Minoxidil solution.
Lab Monitoring
- Routine lab monitoring is generally not required for topical Minoxidil due to minimal systemic absorption. Patients with pre-existing cardiac conditions should be monitored for systemic effects if concerns arise.
Doctor Notes
- Counsel patients on realistic expectations and the importance of continuous use.
- Advise patients on proper application technique and hand hygiene.
- Monitor for signs of systemic absorption, especially in patients with cardiovascular conditions.
- Advise women about the potential for facial hair growth with 5% Minoxidil.
Patient Guidelines
- Apply only to a dry scalp and hair.
- Use only on the affected areas.
- Wash hands thoroughly after application.
- Do not use on irritated, sunburned, or broken skin.
- Avoid contact with eyes, nose, and mouth.
- It may take 2-4 months to see results, and continuous use is necessary to maintain hair regrowth.
- If hair growth stops or new hair falls out after discontinuing use, hair loss will return.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, do not double the next dose. Simply continue with your regular schedule. Do not apply more than the recommended amount.
Driving Precautions
Minoxidil topical solution is generally not expected to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if side effects like dizziness occur, patients should avoid such activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a healthy diet.
- Manage stress, as stress can contribute to hair loss.
- Avoid harsh hair treatments and excessive heat styling.
- Protect your scalp from sun exposure.
