Description
Overview of the medicine
Handirub is a topical analgesic rub formulated with methyl salicylate, menthol, and camphor. It is used for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with simple backache, arthritis, strains, bruises, and sprains.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply to the affected area 2-3 times daily. Gently massage until the rub is absorbed.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required. Use as for adults.
Renal_impairment
Not applicable for topical use as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a thin layer to the clean, dry affected area. Do not apply to broken, irritated skin, or open wounds. Wash hands thoroughly after application.
Mechanism of Action
Methyl salicylate acts as a topical NSAID, providing local analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Menthol and camphor are counterirritants that produce a sensation of warmth or coolness, distracting from pain and increasing local blood flow. This combined action helps to relieve muscle and joint discomfort.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within a few minutes of application.
Excretion
Mainly local effect; systemically absorbed salicylates are excreted renally.
Half life
Systemic half-life of salicylates varies (2-4 hours for low doses), but not clinically significant for topical use.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs through the skin, primarily localized action. Salicylates can be absorbed systemically to a small extent.
Metabolism
Locally metabolized in the skin and if absorbed, by hepatic enzymes for salicylates.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients (methyl salicylate, menthol, camphor, or other excipients)
- Application on broken, irritated, or damaged skin
- Children under 2 years of age (due to camphor and menthol content)
- Asthma or other respiratory conditions sensitive to menthol or camphor vapors
Drug Interactions
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
Though systemic absorption is minimal, large doses of topical salicylates over prolonged periods or large areas could theoretically increase the risk of bleeding. Use with caution.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause serious systemic effects. However, excessive application may lead to increased skin irritation. In case of accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention, as it can be toxic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or lactation. Use with caution, especially on large body areas or for prolonged periods, due to potential systemic absorption of salicylates.
