Description
Overview of the medicine
Hepa-B 10 mcg Injection is a recombinant vaccine used to prevent infection caused by the Hepatitis B virus. It works by stimulating the body's immune system to produce antibodies against the virus, providing active immunization.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For adults and adolescents (16 years and above), typically 20 mcg (1.0 mL) per dose. The standard primary immunization schedule involves 3 doses administered at 0, 1, and 6 months.
Elderly
Same as adults, though antibody response might be lower; 20 mcg (1.0 mL) per dose.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment, but a higher dose (e.g., 40 mcg) or additional doses might be required for hemodialysis patients to achieve adequate seroprotection.
How to Take
Intramuscular injection, usually in the deltoid muscle for adults and children, or anterolateral aspect of the thigh for infants.
Mechanism of Action
The vaccine contains purified surface antigen of the Hepatitis B virus (HBsAg) produced by recombinant DNA technology. When administered, it stimulates the humoral immune system to produce specific anti-HBs antibodies, thereby providing active immunity against Hepatitis B infection.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Protective antibodies usually detectable 1-2 months after the primary series is completed.
Excretion
Not applicable.
Half life
Not applicable; protection lasts for many years, often lifelong.
Absorption
Not applicable in a pharmacokinetic sense; absorbed into the immune system.
Metabolism
Not applicable; components are processed by antigen-presenting cells.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine, including yeast
- •Severe acute febrile illness
Drug Interactions
Other vaccines
Can generally be co-administered with other routine vaccines at different injection sites.
Immunosuppressants
May reduce the immune response to the vaccine, requiring higher doses or additional doses.
Storage
Store in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely to cause serious harm. Symptoms, if any, would typically be an exaggeration of local or systemic side effects. Management is supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and recommended for pregnant and lactating women at risk of Hepatitis B infection, as the benefits outweigh potential risks. The vaccine is non-infectious.
