Description
Overview of the medicine
Hepatitis B vaccine is used to prevent infection caused by the Hepatitis B virus. It contains a purified surface antigen of the virus, produced by recombinant DNA technology, which stimulates the immune system to produce protective antibodies.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 20 mcg (1.0 mL) intramuscularly, administered as a 3-dose series (0, 1, and 6 months) or accelerated schedules.
Elderly
Same as adults, though immune response may be slightly diminished in some. Higher doses may be considered if response is inadequate.
Renal_impairment
Same as adults; higher doses or additional doses may be considered for non-responders, especially in dialysis patients.
How to Take
Intramuscular injection, preferably in the deltoid muscle in adults and children, or anterolateral thigh in infants.
Mechanism of Action
Induces active immunity against Hepatitis B virus by stimulating the production of specific antibodies against the surface antigen (HBsAg).
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Protective immunity typically develops after the second or third dose, around 1-2 months after the full primary series.
Excretion
Not applicable. The antigen is processed and memory cells are formed.
Half life
Not applicable in the typical pharmacological sense. Immunological memory can last for decades.
Absorption
Administered intramuscularly, the antigen is processed by antigen-presenting cells.
Metabolism
Not applicable. The antigen is processed by immune cells.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of Hepatitis B vaccine or to any component of the vaccine (e.g., yeast).
- •Moderate to severe acute illness with or without fever (vaccination should be postponed until recovery).
Drug Interactions
Other vaccines
Can generally be co-administered with most other vaccines, but at different injection sites.
Immunosuppressants
May reduce the immune response to the vaccine. Higher doses or additional doses may be needed.
Storage
Store in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Do not freeze; freezing destroys the potency of the vaccine.
Overdose
Overdose is highly unlikely with a vaccine. No specific treatment required beyond observation for adverse events.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and recommended for pregnant and lactating women at risk of HBV infection. No evidence of harm to the fetus or infant.
