Description
Overview of the medicine
Hepaximin 200 mg Tablet contains Rifaximin, a non-systemic antibiotic used to treat various gastrointestinal infections and conditions. It acts locally in the gut due to its minimal systemic absorption.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For Traveler's Diarrhea: 200 mg orally three times daily for 3 days. For other indications, follow doctor's advice.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is needed for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is recommended for patients with renal impairment due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
Take Hepaximin 200 mg Tablet orally with or without food, as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Rifaximin inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis by binding to bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Its poor systemic absorption allows it to act locally in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing bacterial load where desired.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid for local antibacterial action in the gut; symptoms relief for traveler's diarrhea typically within 24-48 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the feces (>96% of the dose) due to minimal systemic absorption.
Half life
Plasma half-life is short (approximately 5-6 hours), but its local action persists within the gut.
Absorption
Very low systemic absorption (<0.4%) after oral administration, ensuring high local gut concentration.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized by CYP3A4, primarily in the liver, with very limited systemic exposure.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Rifaximin, rifamycin antimicrobial agents, or any component of the formulation.
- Severe diarrheal disease complicated by fever or blood in the stool.
Drug Interactions
Cyclosporine
Concurrent administration with cyclosporine significantly increases systemic exposure to rifaximin. Monitor for systemic effects of rifaximin.
P-glycoprotein Inhibitors/Inducers
Co-administration with P-glycoprotein inhibitors (e.g., cyclosporine) may increase systemic exposure, while inducers (e.g., rifampin) may decrease it. However, clinical significance is minimal due to low systemic absorption.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, no specific antidote is available. Management should be symptomatic and supportive. Contact a poison control center or emergency services immediately.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use in pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution is advised during lactation; consult your doctor.
