Description
Overview of the medicine
Hexiphen 5 mg Tablet contains Trihexyphenidyl Hydrochloride, an anticholinergic agent used to treat Parkinson's disease and drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms. It helps to reduce stiffness, tremors, and muscle spasms.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Parkinson's: Initially 1 mg daily, increased by 2 mg every 3-5 days to a total of 6-10 mg daily (max 15 mg) in 3-4 divided doses, preferably with meals. Drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms: 5-15 mg daily in divided doses, adjusted based on response.
Elderly
Start with lower doses and titrate slowly due to increased sensitivity to anticholinergic effects.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustments may be necessary, starting with lower doses.
How to Take
Hexiphen tablets should be taken orally, with or after meals, to minimize gastrointestinal irritation. Dosage should be individualized and gradually increased.
Mechanism of Action
Trihexyphenidyl works by blocking cholinergic receptors in the central nervous system, thereby restoring the balance between dopamine and acetylcholine. This action helps to reduce the symptoms of Parkinson's disease and drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms.
