Mechanism of Action
Chlorhexidine gluconate is a biguanide antiseptic that binds to the bacterial cell wall and disrupts the cell membrane, leading to increased permeability, leakage of intracellular components, and ultimately cell death. It has broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, and some viruses.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action, typically within 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Excretion
Excreted mainly via feces if systemically absorbed, but topical application leads to negligible systemic exposure.
Half life
Not relevant for systemic half-life due to minimal absorption; prolonged residual activity on skin.
Absorption
Very poorly absorbed through intact skin. Systemic absorption after topical application is minimal.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism, if any, due to poor absorption.
