Description
Overview of the medicine
Hexisol (Chlorhexidine gluconate) is an antiseptic agent used to disinfect skin, treat minor wounds, and as an oral rinse to reduce bacteria in the mouth and treat gum disease (gingivitis). It works by killing or preventing the growth of bacteria, fungi, and some viruses.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Oral rinse: 10-15 ml, twice daily for 30-60 seconds after brushing. Topical solution: Apply undiluted to affected area as needed.
Elderly
Same as adults, no specific dosage adjustment needed.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For oral rinse, swish in mouth and spit out. Do not swallow. For topical solution, apply directly to skin or wound. Do not dilute unless otherwise instructed. Avoid contact with eyes and ears.
Mechanism of Action
Chlorhexidine gluconate is a cationic biguanide. It binds to the negatively charged bacterial cell wall, altering its permeability. This leads to leakage of intracellular components and eventual cell death. It has broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and some enveloped viruses.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, within minutes for antiseptic action.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via feces if ingested; otherwise, largely remains on the application site or is rinsed away.
Half life
Not applicable for systemic elimination due to minimal absorption; prolonged local activity.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin or mucous membranes; primarily acts locally.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized systemically.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine or any component of the formulation.
- Should not be used in contact with brain, meninges, or middle ear.
- Not recommended for use in body cavities or for enemas.
Drug Interactions
Anionic agents
Anionic compounds (e.g., soaps, toothpastes containing sodium lauryl sulfate) can inactivate chlorhexidine. Rinse mouth thoroughly with water after using toothpaste before using chlorhexidine mouthwash.
Other topical antiseptics
Avoid concurrent use with other topical antiseptics without consulting a healthcare professional as interactions are possible.
Storage
Store below 30°C, in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Accidental ingestion of chlorhexidine gluconate solution may cause gastric irritation, nausea, and vomiting. Systemic toxicity from overdose is rare due to poor absorption. Treatment is supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Chlorhexidine is minimally absorbed systemically. It is generally considered safe for topical and oral rinse use during pregnancy and lactation. Consult a doctor if concerned.
