Description
Overview of the medicine
Hyginol-01-05-Cream is a topical preparation combining an antiseptic (Povidone-Iodine 0.1%) and a mild corticosteroid (Hydrocortisone 0.05%) for the treatment of various skin conditions characterized by inflammation and potential infection.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected area 2-3 times daily, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required, use with caution.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for topical use, but caution advised with extensive use on broken skin.
How to Take
For external use only. Wash hands before and after application. Apply a thin film to the clean, dry affected skin area and rub gently. Do not apply to eyes or mucous membranes.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone-Iodine acts as a broad-spectrum antiseptic, releasing iodine slowly to kill bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, itching, and redness by suppressing the immune response in the skin.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes for antiseptic action, hours for anti-inflammatory effects.
Excretion
Mainly through kidneys for systemically absorbed components.
Half life
Not precisely defined for topical application with minimal systemic absorption; systemic half-life of hydrocortisone is approximately 1.5-2 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Absorption may increase with broken skin, occlusion, or application to large areas. Iodine from Povidone-Iodine can be absorbed. Hydrocortisone also has some systemic absorption.
Metabolism
Hydrocortisone is primarily metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites. Povidone-Iodine is largely not metabolized, but absorbed iodine is handled by the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Povidone-Iodine, Hydrocortisone, or any excipients
- Thyroid disorders (due to iodine absorption)
- Extensive, deep burns
- Perforated eardrum (if applied to ear area)
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Systemic absorption of iodine may interfere with lithium therapy, potentially causing hypothyroidism.
Other topical preparations
Avoid concurrent use unless directed by a physician, as it may alter absorption or efficacy.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Systemic overdose from topical application is unlikely but possible with extensive use on large areas of broken skin. Symptoms might include thyroid dysfunction (from iodine) or Cushing's syndrome (from hydrocortisone). Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation only if clearly needed and advised by a physician, as systemic absorption of iodine and corticosteroids can occur.
