Overview of the medicine
Ipratropium Bromide is an anticholinergic bronchodilator used to treat bronchospasm associated with COPD and asthma. It works by blocking muscarinic receptors in the airways, leading to bronchodilation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 puff (100 mcg) 2-3 times a day. Maximum 3 puffs (300 mcg) in 24 hours.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment generally required, but monitor for anticholinergic side effects.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment generally required.
How to Take
Inhale orally as directed. Shake well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Ipratropium Bromide is an anticholinergic (parasympatholytic) agent which, by blocking muscarinic receptors, causes bronchodilation. It inhibits vagally mediated reflexes by antagonizing the action of acetylcholine.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Ipratropium Bromide, atropine or its derivatives.
- •Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to soy lecithin or related food products such as soybean and peanut (some formulations may contain soy lecithin).
Drug Interactions
Beta-agonists
May have additive bronchodilating effects.
Other anticholinergics
May increase anticholinergic side effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from direct sunlight and freezing. Do not puncture or incinerate the canister.
Overdose
Symptoms may include dry mouth, blurred vision, tachycardia, and urinary retention. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic.
