Description
Overview of the medicine
Jpdrox-250 mg Chewable Tablet contains Cefadroxil, a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, especially in children due to its chewable form.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 500 mg to 1 g orally every 12-24 hours, depending on infection severity and type. (For children >6 years or >40 kg): 250-500 mg every 12 hours or 30 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses. Max 1g/day for certain infections.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Reduced dosage is necessary. For CrCl 50 mL/min, 500 mg every 12 hours. For CrCl 25-49 mL/min, 500 mg every 24 hours. For CrCl <25 mL/min, 500 mg every 36 hours.
How to Take
Can be taken with or without food. Chew the tablet completely before swallowing. For children, ensure full chewing to avoid choking.
Mechanism of Action
Cefadroxil is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to one or more of the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This prevents the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Antibacterial effect typically observed within hours of first dose.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Approximately 90% of the drug is excreted within 24 hours.
Half life
Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours in individuals with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, even with food. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1 to 2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefadroxil, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin (due to potential cross-reactivity)
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May decrease renal tubular secretion of cefadroxil, resulting in increased and prolonged plasma concentrations.
Oral anticoagulants
May enhance the anticoagulant effect by altering gut flora.
Live bacterial vaccines (e.g., typhoid)
Antibiotics may reduce the therapeutic effect of oral typhoid vaccine.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea, and hematuria. Management involves supportive care and symptomatic treatment. Hemodialysis may be useful in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefadroxil is excreted in breast milk in small quantities; use with caution during lactation.
