Description
Overview of the medicine
Keor 200 mg Capsule contains Cephalexin, a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections including those of the respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue, urinary tract, and ears.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
General adult dosage for Cephalexin is 250 mg to 1 g every 6-12 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection. For Keor 200 mg capsule, follow physician's advice, typically 200 mg 2-3 times daily for specific conditions.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary for elderly patients with impaired renal function. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Reduce total daily dose for patients with renal impairment based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 10-40 mL/min, 250 mg-500 mg every 8-12 hours. For CrCl <10 mL/min, 250 mg every 12-24 hours.
How to Take
Take orally with a glass of water, with or without food. Taking with food may help reduce gastrointestinal upset.
Mechanism of Action
Cephalexin exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached approximately 1 hour after oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion, with about 80% recovered in the urine within 8 hours.
Half life
Approximately 0.5 to 1.2 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapid and well-absorbed (75-90%) from the gastrointestinal tract, even in the presence of food, though peak levels may be slightly delayed.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cephalexin or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., penicillins).
Drug Interactions
Metformin
Cephalexin may increase metformin concentrations; monitor blood glucose.
Probenecid
May decrease renal excretion of cephalexin, leading to increased and prolonged plasma concentrations.
Aminoglycosides
Concurrent use may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance the anticoagulant effect, requiring closer monitoring of INR.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea, and hematuria. Management is primarily supportive; gastric lavage may be considered if ingestion is recent and massive. Hemodialysis may be useful in reducing serum concentrations.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus. Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in small amounts into breast milk; generally considered safe during lactation, but observe infant for diarrhea or thrush.
