Description
Overview of the medicine
Kfore 500 mg Tablet contains Potassium Chloride, an electrolyte crucial for various bodily functions. It is used to prevent or treat low blood potassium (hypokalemia).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 20-100 mEq (equivalent to 1500-7500 mg Potassium Chloride) per day, divided into 2-4 doses, adjusted based on serum potassium levels. A 500mg tablet contains about 6.7 mEq.
Elderly
Lower doses may be required due to age-related decline in renal function. Careful monitoring is essential.
Renal_impairment
Contraindicated in severe renal impairment. In mild to moderate impairment, use with extreme caution and reduced doses, with frequent monitoring of serum potassium.
How to Take
Take with food or immediately after meals to minimize gastrointestinal irritation. Swallow tablets whole without crushing or chewing.
Mechanism of Action
Potassium is the major intracellular cation and is essential for maintaining acid-base balance, isotonicity, and electrodynamic characteristics of cells. It is involved in nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, and renal function.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within hours for oral preparations.
Excretion
Primarily via the kidneys, with some excretion in feces and sweat.
Half life
Dependent on renal function; typically short, as potassium is rapidly excreted.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Tablets may have delayed or sustained release.
Metabolism
Not metabolized; it's an electrolyte.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hyperkalemia (high blood potassium)
- Severe renal impairment
- Acute dehydration
- Untreated Addison's disease
- Conditions causing rapid increase in serum potassium, e.g., extensive tissue breakdown
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs
May reduce renal excretion of potassium, increasing hyperkalemia risk.
ACE inhibitors / Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs)
Increased risk of hyperkalemia.
Potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone, amiloride)
Significantly increased risk of severe hyperkalemia.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include muscle weakness, tingling, paralysis, heart palpitations, and severe hyperkalemia leading to cardiac arrest. Treatment involves immediate discontinuation, calcium gluconate for cardiac stability, insulin/glucose infusion, and possibly dialysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation when medically indicated, as potassium is a normal body component. Use with caution and only if clearly needed.

Lab Monitoring
- Serum potassium levels
- Renal function (creatinine, BUN)
- ECG (in cases of severe hyperkalemia or cardiac risk)
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize slow administration in IV form and careful monitoring.
- Educate patients on symptoms of hyperkalemia and proper administration with food/water.
Patient Guidelines
- Take with plenty of water to prevent irritation.
- Do not crush or chew tablets.
- Report any signs of hyperkalemia (e.g., muscle weakness, slow heart rate) immediately.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose.
Driving Precautions
Generally safe to drive as potassium chloride is not known to impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet as advised by your doctor.
- Avoid excessive intake of potassium-rich foods unless specifically advised.
