Description
Overview of the medicine
Klavin 125 mg Suspension is an antibiotic medication containing a combination of Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections by killing bacteria and preventing them from growing.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For children 2-12 years: 25 mg/kg/day (Amoxicillin component) in divided doses, usually 5 ml (125 mg) every 8-12 hours, depending on infection severity. Not typically for adults.
Elderly
Not applicable for this suspension strength. Elderly patients typically require higher strength formulations, with dosage adjustment based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
For children with renal impairment: Dosage reduction or extended dosing interval required based on creatinine clearance, as advised by a physician.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before each use. Administer orally using the provided measuring spoon or dropper, preferably at the start of a meal to minimize gastrointestinal intolerance.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic Acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that prevents bacteria from inactivating Amoxicillin, thereby extending its antibacterial spectrum.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Amoxicillin: 1-1.3 hours; Clavulanic Acid: 1 hour
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Food can reduce GI upset but does not significantly affect absorption.
Metabolism
Both are partially metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •History of hypersensitivity to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics
- •History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with amoxicillin/clavulanate therapy
- •Mononucleosis (increased risk of skin rash)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May prolong prothrombin time; monitor INR closely.
Allopurinol
Increased incidence of skin rash.
Methotrexate
Increased methotrexate toxicity due to reduced renal tubular secretion.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 25°C in a dry place. Store the reconstituted suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard after 7-10 days.
Overdose
Symptoms may include gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and disturbances of the fluid and electrolyte balance. Treatment is supportive; hemodialysis can remove amoxicillin/clavulanate from circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Can be used during pregnancy if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk, use with caution during lactation; monitor infant for diarrhea, candidiasis, and skin rash.
