Description
Overview of the medicine
L-con (Levocetirizine) is an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
5 mg (one tablet) once daily in the evening.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be required in elderly patients with impaired renal function. Consult a physician.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 30-49 mL/min, 5 mg every 2 days; for CrCl 10-29 mL/min, 5 mg every 3 days.
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food, preferably in the evening.
Mechanism of Action
Selectively blocks histamine H1-receptors, thereby inhibiting the effects of histamine and reducing allergic symptoms.

Excretion
Primarily excreted via urine (approximately 85.4% of the dose) and feces (approximately 12.9% of the dose).
Half life
Approximately 7-10 hours
Absorption
Rapidly and extensively absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Less than 14% of the dose is metabolized in the liver by oxidation. No significant cytochrome P450 isozymes are involved.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levocetirizine, cetirizine, hydroxyzine, or any component of the formulation
- Patients with end-stage renal disease (CrCl < 10 mL/min) or undergoing hemodialysis
- Patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption
Drug Interactions
Ritonavir
May increase levocetirizine plasma levels.
CNS Depressants
Concomitant use with alcohol or other CNS depressants may cause additive reductions in alertness and performance.

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness in adults and agitation or restlessness followed by drowsiness in children. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; there is no specific antidote. Gastric lavage may be considered soon after ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus. However, there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during lactation should be done with caution, as levocetirizine is excreted in breast milk.
