Description
Overview of the medicine
Laxopic 10 mg Tablet contains Sodium Picosulfate, a stimulant laxative used for the short-term treatment of constipation and for bowel preparation before medical procedures like colonoscopy.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 5-10 mg once daily at bedtime. May be increased to 15 mg if necessary. For bowel preparation, dose may vary as directed by physician.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but start with a lower dose (e.g., 5 mg) and adjust as needed.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment necessary, but use with caution.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably at bedtime, with water. Do not chew or crush the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Sodium Picosulfate is a contact laxative. It is metabolized by colonic bacteria into active compounds that stimulate the intestinal mucosa, leading to increased peristalsis (muscle contractions) and accumulation of water and electrolytes in the colon. This softens the stool and facilitates bowel movement.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
6-12 hours
Excretion
Primarily excreted in feces; small amount of active metabolite absorbed and excreted in urine as glucuronides.
Half life
Not well-defined for the active metabolite due to localized action and rapid elimination after colonic activation.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption of the parent drug. It is a prodrug, activated by colonic bacteria.
Metabolism
Bacterial hydrolysis in the colon to active metabolite BHPM.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to sodium picosulfate or any component
- •Acute inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., appendicitis, colitis)
- •Severe abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting
- •Intestinal obstruction
- •Severe dehydration
Drug Interactions
Antibiotics
May reduce the laxative effect by altering gut flora responsible for activating sodium picosulfate.
Diuretics, Adrenocorticosteroids
May increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance (especially hypokalemia) when used long-term with laxatives.
Cardiac glycosides (e.g., Digoxin)
Electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia) induced by laxative abuse can increase sensitivity to cardiac glycosides.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms: Severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea, significant fluid and electrolyte loss (especially potassium). Management: Symptomatic and supportive treatment, including rehydration and correction of electrolyte imbalance. Chronic overdose may lead to kidney stones, kidney damage, and metabolic alkalosis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Use only if clearly needed and potential benefits outweigh risks. Lactation: Small amounts of active metabolite may be excreted in breast milk, but not expected to cause adverse effects in infant at therapeutic doses. Consult a doctor.
