Description
Overview of the medicine
Laxur Plus is a combination laxative containing Lactulose and Ispaghula Husk, used for the treatment of chronic constipation and conditions requiring soft stools.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 1-2 sachets (10g lactulose + 3.5g isphaghula) once daily, mixed with water. Dose may be adjusted based on response.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, with careful monitoring for fluid and electrolyte balance.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required, but monitor fluid intake.
How to Take
Mix the contents of one sachet with a full glass of water (approx. 150 ml). Stir well and drink immediately. Ensure adequate fluid intake throughout the day.
Mechanism of Action
Lactulose works as an osmotic laxative, drawing water into the colon to soften stools. Ispaghula Husk is a bulk-forming laxative, absorbing water and swelling to form a gel-like mass that promotes bowel movement.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
1-3 days for full effect (for Lactulose).
Excretion
Lactulose is excreted unchanged or as bacterial metabolites in feces. Ispaghula Husk is excreted unchanged in feces.
Half life
Not applicable due to minimal absorption.
Absorption
Lactulose is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Ispaghula Husk is not absorbed.
Metabolism
Lactulose is metabolized by colonic bacteria. Ispaghula Husk is not metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Lactulose or Ispaghula Husk
- •Galactosaemia
- •Intestinal obstruction
- •Acute abdominal pain of unknown origin
Drug Interactions
Antacids
May reduce the effect of Lactulose.
Other laxatives
Avoid concomitant use as it may lead to severe diarrhea and electrolyte imbalance.
Broad-spectrum antibiotics
May reduce the degradation of Lactulose by colonic bacteria, potentially reducing its efficacy.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose may lead to diarrhea, abdominal pain, and electrolyte disturbances (especially hypokalemia). Management involves symptomatic treatment and correction of fluid/electrolyte imbalance.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation, but use with caution and under medical advice. Ensure adequate fluid intake.
