Description
Overview of the medicine
Lemulin 150 mg Injection contains Lemulicin, a novel broad-spectrum antibiotic indicated for the treatment of severe bacterial infections. It is administered intravenously and works by inhibiting essential bacterial processes.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
150 mg every 12 hours by intravenous infusion over 60 minutes.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required based on age alone; monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
For CrCl 30-50 mL/min, reduce dose to 150 mg every 24 hours. For CrCl < 30 mL/min, refer to specific guidelines.
How to Take
Administer by intravenous infusion over 60 minutes. Do not administer as a rapid bolus injection. Reconstitute the powder with sterile water for injection, then dilute in appropriate intravenous fluid.
Mechanism of Action
Lemulicin selectively binds to a unique ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis crucial for bacterial growth and survival. This leads to bactericidal activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes of intravenous infusion.
Excretion
Mainly renal excretion (approximately 60% as unchanged drug) and biliary excretion (40% as metabolites).
Half life
Approximately 4-6 hours.
Absorption
Rapid and complete absorption after intravenous administration. Bioavailability is 100%.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic metabolism via CYP450 enzymes, with some active metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Lemulicin or any components of the formulation.
- Severe hepatic impairment.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Close monitoring of INR is recommended.
Strong CYP3A4 Inducers
Concomitant use with strong CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., rifampicin) may decrease Lemulicin plasma concentrations, reducing its efficacy.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. Reconstituted solution should be used immediately.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken. Hemodialysis may be considered, although specific data on its effectiveness in removing Lemulicin are limited.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman as Lemulicin is excreted in breast milk.
